Job report. [11 Jan 2007|11:01pm]
[ mood | exhausted ]
[ music | I Don't Feel Like Dancing -- Scissor Sisters ]

Have started new job, last day of the week tomorrow. It is fantastic, full of great people, wonderful training, and all things about it are exceptionally good. I am exceptionally exhausted every night, though, just fit to faceplant. All this learning, oh, my brain.

I'm pretty sure, though, that I'm laughing at this article I just found because it's the funniest thing ever, and not just because I'm tired. Click click to read. Worksafe.

Flic goes to Africa on Tuesday. The reality of this has been hitting her the last few days. I will miss her fiercely, and I am so worried about some of the things she plans to do. Yes, this from me, the one who merrily traipses to every known corner of the globe.

My friend B is in surgery right now, or perhaps just coming out of it if it went well and started on time, and I am also nervous sick about him.

This, however, is a positive post. Work is great, and I will have good news soon, and wow, work is so full of exciting opportunities. I am tired, but very happy.

Ponderings. [01 Jan 2007|11:51pm]
[ mood | sleepy ]
[ music | Filthy/Gorgeous -- Scissor Sisters ]

This is why there is a better way.

I was talking to my friend B yesterday, and from that discussion evolved a question I suggested he write about -- and something that, now I ponder, I am also going to try and write about. It is something I would love to hear from anybody on this list about, as well.

What do you believe? What ideas and beliefs drive what you do? What is important? What do you strive to make sure you consider when making your decisions? Through what filters do you view he world? What's not important? Where do your priorities lie?

In other news, my resolutions:

- Quit taking the Lord's name in vain. I was in company recently that I did not wish to offend, and so restrained myself. I realised how much I do it. If you catch me, please call me.
- Send thank you notes.
- Follow detailed fitness goals I have made.
- No wriggling out of going to pilates.
- Get fruit and vegies and meat from local small business, both because it's better, and because I'd like to support them.
- A leedle less time on le computer.
- Do not become That Girl Who Constantly Talks About Wedding.

You all missed my completely random and disconnected ramblings, I know it.

Here goes 2007... [01 Jan 2007|01:40pm]
It is 1:30pm. I am lying in bed, drinking chocolate ice cream topping from the bottle, still not dressed. For the topping, at least, I blame B. If he doesn't know by now not to leave it where I can get to it with minimal effort, then it's his own fault. He's still going to kill me when he works out I've had most of it. I have an essay due in 3.5 days. I must move and write it. I really must.

After a hiatus, I am back on the LJ writing/reading bandwagon. I go forth now to write an essay on gender differences in communication style. In other major news, I have secured my dream job and begin work on January 8th.

Year in Review [31 Dec 2006|05:39pm]
1. In 2006, I gained: Very dear new friends, half a Masters so far, a wonderful new job, an engagement ring, new travel experiences.

2. I stopped: working in a place I really didn't enjoy.

3. I started: studying to take on a career I am hugely excited about.

4. I was hugely satisfied by: the experience of helping run a truly amazing community.

5. And frustrated by: international and domestic politics.

6. I am so embarrassed that I: managed to forget a slew of birthdays yet /again/.

7. Once again: I took off around the world.

8. Once again, I did not: do my savings account any good.

9. The biggest physical difference between me last December and this December is: that my cardio is down, because a series of colds have kept me from running.

10. The biggest psychological difference between me last December and this December is: I know where I'm going, career-wise, and I'm intensely excited.

11. I loved spending time: writing, playing, travelling.

12. Why did I spend even two minutes: wondering whether to buy that ticket to Morocco?

13. I should have spent more time: on my homework.

14. I regret buying: ceramics so early in a trip, when I am such a notorious klutz!

15. I will never regret buying: my plane ticket, nor my lovely laptop.

16. I was online way too much. (But I'm not sorry.)

17. I didn't write enough.

18. Pessimists drove me crazy.

19. This year Was: one of my best ever, involving wonderful travel, new friends I hope I will always keep, and the start of the journey towards being married.

20. The most relaxing place I went was: Kevington, as always, followed by my friend James' house in Genova, Italy and my friend Marion's house in Derry, N. Ireland.

21. I feel so: deeply blessed.

22. Why did I go to: ...nope, all good choices this year.

23. The best thing I did for someone else was: being able to support someone I love through a really tough 12 months.

24. The best thing I did for myself was: decide to take this year off from full time employment.

25. The best thing someone did for me was: ask me if I'd like to marry them.

26. The one thing I'd like to do again, but do it better, is: my advanced communications skills subject. It was the most valuable learning experience of my life, but I feel I barely scratched the surface.

Happy New Year, everyone. I hope that 2007 brings you unimagined opportunities, and that you are able to spot and grasp them, and enjoy every moment.

So, I'm home.

I've been lying low since I hit Aussie soil once more, keeping my phone off and lurking, as though people won't realise I'm back in the real world if I make out like I'm not. You'd be surprised how well it works, seriously.

I've quit my old job and secured a new one (better money, better hours), recovered from the illness I crashed down with on my last night in Morocco, caught a new cold, and settled into the job. Some time spent planning engagement party. Have decided I have way too many friends, as the whole thing is getting wildly out of hand. Will certainly be a fun night, but oh, the clean up... I've also caught up with lots of you, and those I haven't seen -- I'm looking for you!

Overall, being at home has been good. Certainly it's been wonderful to see Brendan, my family, friends and my flatmates (who are something of a second family). I have to admit, though, I'm still longing to be away. I wasn't ready to come home, and were it not that Brendan had already made the trip ahead of me, I'd have been looking hard for a way to stay away a little longer. There has been a lot of navel-gazing going on re. What I Want To Be When I Grow Up, but that can be saved for another post.

Today was spent battling a fierce cold, and dealing with a really distressing court case that I'm not going to bring down anybody's day by describing. The whole thing was saved from being a complete disaster when I arrived home to find out that the CD of Morocco photos that Ailie had sent me finally arrived today.

A few pictures from Morocco... )

It has come belatedly to my attention that some of you are busy living lives, and thus not glued to my travel blog. The nerve, honestly...

Anyhow. For those who aren't in the loop, I'm currently in Paris, am heading on to Italy on Monday to spend a week with my friend James, then to Morocco for a couple of weeks. Also, Brendan asked me to marry him, and I very enthusiastically said yes. For the overseas sorts who have expressed tentative interest in attending the big day, we're thinking of the end of next year, so you have loads of time. In order that you do not miss such important announcements in the future, you should be reading the travel blog. It comes complete with pictures.

[ music | That's The Way I Like It -- Ben Lee ]

First up, snaps to the Ugandan Rugby 7s team for some very fashionable uniforms. Can't go past those, can you?

Secondly, a little bit of gratuitous Lote Tuqiri, because we all need some more of him in our lives.

Having the Commonwealth Games going on here is mad. I was walking through the city after work on Wednesday, and there were police on every corner, tourists in every direction, schoolkids all over the place because it's school holidays, helicopters overheaad, and on my way home, navy destroyers out on the bay. There's a wonderful mood in the city. It's crowded and frantic, but everyone's having a fantastic time. There are all these great free events going on, volunteers on every corner -- it's a great time to be in the city. I went to the Rugby 7s competition with [info]sainity and we had a ball. The atmosphere was huge, the crowd was going nuts, supporting whoever happened to be on as only Aussies can. Whoever knew there were so many fans of Namibia out there? Who even knew that Niue Island existed, let alone had a rugby team? I'm so glad we went.

This time in a week I'll be in Ireland, catching up with family I haven't seen since 2000. To say that I can't wait is an understatement of phenomenal proportions. I am psyched. I'll be running a travel blog again like I did last trip, and I'll stick the address up here soon. For those who need to know or keep forgetting, my dates are roughly:

March 23-April 12: Ireland, incl. Dublin, Cork, Galway, Killarney. (Come on [info]sharpwords, meet me in Galway, I'll bring the Monkey! We're thinking of checking out the Aran Islands as well, interested? I'd love to see you guys.)

April 12-April 30: Paris.

May 1-May 7: Provence, Cote d'Azur, Genoa (Italy).

May 7-May 21: Morocco, incl. Casablanca, Fez, Rabat, Marrakech, the Sahara.

May 22: Home to Melbourne!

Got a typhoid jab yesterday, how exotic does that sound? Then spent the rest of the day helping M move house. They have an incredible place in Carlton near Melb Uni, Lygon St, Thresherman's, Ti Amo (Jules, Yulin, that's where we ate our Italian food), the Nova Cinema, the works. /What/ a location. Crawled home exhausted and pathetic at the end of a very long day. Now working every weekday between today and departure, eek. Two weeks today, I'm off. Trip preparation? For weaklings, I say.

Man, can we cook. All five of my current household (we have an extra who's in transit to her new place) just got it together in the kitchen, and we cooked ourselves up a Thai feast. Pad Thai, sweet chilli chicken with cashews, red curry with lamb and coconut. Then we sat down with it and watched the Firefly pilot, just because.

I am so happy and full and utterly content that I may die.

[ music | Another Brick in the Wall -- Pink Floyd ]

The Garth Nix thing was not a reading, but rather a dinner and a chat. He suckered us all in with a wonderful tall story about finding a skeleton. I have to admire his art, because I sucker people in all the time with my stories about drop bears. You get them with the small details. Wait, [info]gyrfalcon, [info]phoenixrev, I told you guys that I was making that stuff up, right?

He answered questions about his books and writing project, and obediently signed all of ours without a single complaint. Although his talk was wonderful, two things that were unrelated entirely to Mr. Nix were the highlights of my evening.

The first was that [info]sainity and I were on a table with a whole lot of kids in year 6 and year 7. They were wonderfully well read, well-spoken, interesting, funny, enthusiastic, and just generally delightful. We had a great time talking to them.

The second was the inherent comedy in watching [info]sainity dissolve into a pile of screaming fangirl goo when she got to talk to Garth. It was delightful to watch.

[ music | Going for my Blue Belt -- The Fauves ]

Today is the first day of Autumn! Happily it will be 30 degrees over the weekend, so this is not as traumatic as it might be.

In other news...
- I'm working odd jobs at the moment, picking up as much money as I can before I go overseas, which is on March 23rd (hey Albie, I'm back at Abacus... you should see the new offices!)
- Flic and M are house-hunting for a place up near Melbourne Uni.
- B's sister is back from her year in the UK, and we are stoked to have her around again, because she's a darling.
- I'm going to see Garth Nix tonight, woot!
- My friends A and L are back from their 9 week honeymoon (bastards!), and I am off in a mo to have brunch with A and hear all about it.
- I have been doing the interview thing with great big fancy law firms, and will know soon what I'll be doing in 2007. If only I had any idea who I want to say yes to...
- My friend A (another A) is having her second child in August! [info]relentlesstoil, I know exactly what I'll be getting for this one!

Things to do before I go...
- earn a couple of grand
- speak to J about whether I'm going to come see him in Italy
- book accom in Paris
- work out what I'm packing
- buy clothes to take
- clean room, lest new lifeforms evolve in the 6 weeks I'm away
- clean study, see above
- buy birthday present to leave for F
- pay car registration
- organise 2007 employment
- organise new phone deal for B and I
- Help F and M move house
- organise healthcare card
- organise travel insurance
- buy C and C a wedding present to take with us to Ireland...

Gah. Must stop making list now, lest I become entirely panicked. This can all happen in 3 weeks, right? Right?
